The Mighty Hunter

This was Jared's first deer hunt in Kansas. He went with one of his co-workers and her husband. We were excited that he got one pretty early in the day and didn't have to be out all day long since the temperature finally dropped and we got our cold spell, starting the night before they went out to hunt. Jared froze (borderline hypothermia) since he didn't have any warmer "camo" clothes than what he's wearing in the pictures. We're going to fix that however. Before he goes again in January we're going to get him some warmer clothes. The good news is that since hamburger is so expensive (even here in cattle country), we won't have to buy any this winter, and can live on venison instead. I was surprised how much it tastes like beef. Deer here in Kansas are not "gamey" like the ones in Idaho - must be the sagebrush they eat there versus the corn and grain they eat here.

The other picture shows better how big the doe is, but I didn't want any younger viewers to be traumatized by seeing Bambi's mom hanging in a tree, so I uploaded it here for those who will appreciate the size of Jared's deer. Incidentally, Jared's co-worker Kelly got a 2 point buck (smaller than Jared's doe) and her husband didn't get anything. Here's a picture of the two deer: And here's a couple of Jared's butchering session on Saturday, which we ended by celebrating with a couple of tender steaks!! Mmmmmm. We ended up with about 20 pounds of deerburger, about 8 roasts, 10 packs of steaks and several packs of deer chops. If Jared goes again in January, we won't have to buy meat for most of the year!!
