A couple of days before Grant's birthday, we went to the Wichita Zoo with Grandma and Grandpa Sommers. Grandma and Grandpa came to visit at the end of April and stayed for Grant's birthday. Daddy had a meeting for work in Wichita, so we all took a little car trip together and while he was in his meeting, the rest of us went to the zoo.
We hadn't ever been to this zoo before, and it was really big compared to the ones we've been to in Kansas. There were more animals and different kinds of animals to see. We had a picnic in the back of the car after we went to the petting zoos.
There were three petting zoos, an American one, an African one and an Asian one. Here's Jacob at the American petting zoo looking at the huge horse in the barnyard. He was a cranky horse apparently, because there was a sign saying not to get too close or he'd try to bite.
This video shows both the boys with the baby goats in the American petting zoo. Jacob wanted so badly to touch the animals, but he would just pet them and then run away. Grant didn't know if he really wanted to touch them or not.
Now, maybe it's just because I've never lived on a farm, but this was the loudest rooster I've ever heard. Maybe that's why he lives at the zoo, eh?
Here's Grant at the African petting zoo, trying to climb the fence to get a better look at the camel. Grant spent most of his time at the zoo trying to climb fences. He even got his head stuck between the bars in one of the fences at the zoo because he was trying to pick a flower. Didn't get a picture, because I thought that would make me a horrible mother, but I laughed a lot while I rescued him.
These are the grizzly bears we saw at the zoo. Jacob loved the bears and he repeats a litany of all the animals we saw at the zoo all the time. He adds a few that he likes that we didn't really see, like pandas for example.
Here's Jacob and Grandpa looking at the leopard together. When we went to the lion exhibit, there was a fake zebra carcass outside to show what kinds of things lions eat, so now Grant remembers the bloody dead zebra at the zoo. Nice!
The gorillas were my favorite exhibit. There were two huge ones in this indoor cage. There were quite a few in the outdoor exhibit that were really fun to watch.
This was kind of a cool exhibit with the big tortoises. It was like a big wagon wheel platform. That's Grant hanging off the edge of it upside down.By the end of the day, the boys were getting pretty grumpy and tired. We took this picture just before Grant had a little meltdown. Then we rode the zoo train for a loop around the zoo and then it was time to go pick up daddy from his meeting. We had dinner at Olive Garden in Wichita before heading home.

Jared, Jen, Grant, Jacob & Lottie live in a little (and we DO mean little) town in Kansas. Having never planned to or even thought about living in Kansas prior to moving here, we didn't know how we'd adjust. Jared and Jen lived in Utah before moving to Kansas in 2004, so we really miss those mountains. Grant was born in 2005, Jacob joined our family in 2007, and our most recent addition is Lottie, born in 2009. We love to spend time together. Since moving to Kansas, Jared and Jen renovated the house they live in (almost entirely, both inside and out). We love to garden during the summer and spend time outside in general, whether it's taking walks or going to the playground. Biking is our preferred method of recreating, but we don't get as many opportunities to do that as we used to. Welcome to our web journal. We hope our friends and family enjoy the news, pictures and video clips of our life, since we live too far away to visit you very often.
