Great BIG Owie!!
Grant got a tricycle for his birthday last month and is still learning how to ride it. He has gotten pretty brave though and likes to ride his "bike" down the steep part of the driveway. Since we live on a cul de sac with only 2 other driveways, it's relatively safe, but he's only allowed to do this if mom and dad are watching and tell him it's okay. Otherwise, he has to stop at the last line in the driveway. He's pretty good at this. He stops there and then looks to see if we're watching and then when we tell him he can go down the hill, he lifts up his feet and ZOOMS down the driveway. Thursday night we were letting him have some fun doing this, but he added a bit of excitement to the process. He has one of Jared's old TONKA dumptrucks from when Jared was little and he likes to carry it up to the line in the driveway and then send it down the hill also. So he was doing this and then he'd go ride his bike down the hill too and then send the truck again, etc. Can you see where this is going? Well, on one of his runs down the driveway, he hit the dumptruck dead on and went over the bars of his tricycle a little bit and bonked his head on the asphalt in the street. It was a big surprise to him that he could get hurt riding his bike. He scraped his hand just a little and has a scratch on the tip of his nose that you can barely see. But that bruise on his forehead, WOW!!! What a shiner!! We tried to get him to let us put some ice on it so it wouldn't swell, but he totally FREAKED out so we stopped.
So, funny thing about this whole episode. Before Grant got on his bike that night, Jared said to me "Hey, should we have him wear his helmet?" and I said, "Oh, not tonight." Heh, heh. Yeah, I was feeling pretty bad about that decision later. So from now on, he WEARS the HELMET!! Which will also be an interesting adventure, since Grant has a deathly fear of the thing. We tried to put it on him later last night to make sure it still fit and he ended up crying so hysterically and screaming so much that he made himself cough to the point of vomiting. Probably not the best time to be trying to make him wear the helmet. Another bad decision I guess.
