Carthage Jail and the Trip Home

Wednesday morning we left Nauvoo and drove to Carthage. This is Grant with his "CarLightning" playing on the bumper of Grandpa's truck while we packed everything up.
This is Carthage Jail. The statue out in front is of Joseph and Hyrum. I think it's called 'The Brothers' or something similar to that anyway.
Grant finally posed for a nice picture here with Jared. He ran around a lot. Trying not to fall asleep.
Heh, heh, but he DID fall asleep!!! The Visitor's Center has a short film that you watch before they take you on the tour of the jail. Jared and I came here in 1999 and went on the tour and watched the film. Grant wasn't interested in it so I stayed outside with him and let him run around a bit. Then we went through the jail and Grant fell asleep just before we went in to the last room - where the martyrdom took place. I was so glad he fell asleep so I could be in there and listen to what our tour guide had to say. I think the visit to Carthage was the perfect end to our vacation - very spiritual environment here, even more so than Nauvoo.
After the tour, Grant and I posed for this picture with the statue. That's the visitor's center off to the right.
Grandma and Grandpa made sure Grant had a pair of shades to take on our trip. He wore them quite often. I was surprised. Our trip happened to be during all the flooding in Missouri and Kansas, so we saw lots of high water on our journey. Here's some video of a detour we had to take near Chillicothe, Missouri because the other side of the divided highway was under water for about 5 miles. We got home Wednesday night at about 7:30. It was a great vacation and we were so glad to be able to go. We've finished our Church History tour of the Midwest now (see our September 2006 blog for the other sites). Whew!
