Birthday Trip to the Zoo

For Grant's birthday this year, we gave him a trip to the zoo. We had planned to go to the Wichita Zoo, but the weather was a little too iffy to make a long drive there and back in one day. So we went to the Topeka Zoo, which is less than an hour away. It was lots of fun. Grant got to see all kinds of animals that he has only seen in pictures.Elephants and a hippopotamus...

A gorilla, which Grant loved! He's been very excited about gorillas since he watched Tarzan. Go figure.

He and the orangutan stared at each other for quite a while.

The tiger was pretty feisty too. If he could have come through the glass at us, he would have. He hisses at us at the end of this video...

Grant got to feed some goats and sheep in the petting zoo. He was a little wary at first, but he got the hang of it and had to feed every one of the animals. We also saw giraffes, lions, bears, and lots of different birds.

Here Grant is sitting by the fish pond. I love this picture of him. He looks like he's posing for a magazine cover or something. The zoo also had an aquariaum with fish in it from the Finding Nemo movie. Here's Grant checking that out...

The lions weren't very exciting. They were all sleeping when we saw them. But Grant loved the statue of the lion just outside the lion exhibit.
Here's Grant modeling his new t-shirt that he got for his birthday. He gets a lot of compliments on this shirt when he wears it. This was Jacob's first trip to a zoo. He was pretty excited naturally. He fell asleep in the carrier. We had a little more excitement than we were prepared for at the end of our trip. While we were in the gift shop picking out a momento of our trip to the zoo, Grant threw up, all over Jared - including down his shirt. It took us a while to get both Jared and the floor of the gift shop cleaned up and Grant settled down again. We're still not sure if he was sick or if it was all the excitement and running around at the zoo that did it. But he did throw up again on the way home from Topeka into a cup that we had ready for just that reason. Poor kid! That was Grant's third birthday.
