Our Summer Vacation Part 2 (Idaho)

On Thursday, we packed up and headed north for Idaho. We stopped in Pocatello to meet up with Rob again and visit his wife and kids while Jared and Rob went dirt biking around that area. Then we drove the rest of the way to Idaho Falls, where Grandma and Grandpa Sommers were waiting anxiously for us to arrive. Grant spent a lot of his time at Grandma Love's house jumping on the trampoline. It was a favorite activity. Grant got to help Grandpa Love blow out his birthday candles on Friday night and eat some birthday cake.
Grant and Grandpa Sommers went for walks by the golf course canal and listened to frogs. We got to run around barefoot, which was great because we rarely get to do that at home because of all the chiggers and ticks. So we reveled in the grass.
Grant went for walks with Grandma Sommers too, but he didn't walk for long. Pretty soon, he was off running again.Jacob wasn't mobile yet while we were on vacation. He had to stay in one place. But he wasn't a big fan of the grass unless he had long pants on. Must have been poky or something.
I just noticed that in most of my pictures Grant has some kind of moustache from eating. Here he is showing Jacob what he made with a metal ring and a golf ball.
Grant ran around a lot and wore himself out. He also wore out Grandpa Sommers. So they took a nap together. While we were in Idaho, Jared got to go mountain biking. He saw a big horn sheep while out on the trail. Something you don't see in Kansas. How exciting! Grandma and Grandpa Sommers went with Jared up mountain biking while I spent the day with the kids at Grandma and Grandpa Love's house. Mandy and Jonathan and the kids came up to visit for the weekend and we got to spend the day together. It turned out to be a good thing I was at home because I pulled some freak muscle in my back that morning and by the afternoon I could barely walk. No idea what happened, but I spent the rest of our vacation walking around holding my back like I was 9 months pregnant and moaning about how much it hurt. NOT the way I planned to spend my time in Idaho. Blast! We did get to take Grant to the temple while we were at home. He had to go all the way around the block smelling the tulips and other flowers. I did manage to get him to sit still for a picture or two. Here he is jumping off the bench out in front of the temple. Any excuse to climb/jump/run! On Sunday, we went to Loves' for a Johnson family gathering so we could see all the family. That was fun. Grant and Alex played on the swingset and slide together for a while. Until Grant got distracted by the trampoline yet again.
Jacob made friends with Uncle Jim and had a good time playing at making silly faces and laughing at each other. Then Grandpa Love challenged Jacob to a tug of war with plastic wristbands. Not sure who won.Jacob latched onto Grandpa for a while and watched his brother out the window playing outside. Next time we visit, Jacob might be ready for the trampoline! On Wednesday, Jared and Grandpa Sommers took Grant out riding on Grandpa's new four-wheeler. I was supposed to go too, but couldn't because of my back! They had a good time. Grant rode with Grandpa and even fell asleep at one point. Jared rode his dirt bike. We had dinner at Loves' house on Thursday night with Justin and Karli. Grant found a new buddy for playing on the swingset in Justin. Although, it looks like Justin's not all that comfortable in the swing. We went over to see Great Grandma Johnson before we left for home. The boys gathered close for a couple pictures. It was fun to be home, but dreadful to leave to go back to Kansas. Here's a shot of Jacob looking all happy and content in Grant's carseat during a stop for lunch. The funny part of this picture is that when we went to get him out, his diaper was poopy and had leaked all over Grant's carseat. So we had to put down some pads for Grant to sit on for the rest of the trip. Here's Grant and Daddy having a picnic in the back of the truck for lunch one day. It was pretty windy and a little chilly, but picnic we did! Another family was across the parking lot doing the same thing. The trip home was pretty routine. No unexpected delays or storms. We stayed in Sidney, Nebraska overnight and went for a long walk before bedtime up to Cabela's store and around their duck pond. Jacob loved getting in the driver's seat any chance he got.Grant did too actually. On the last day of our trip, we went through the part of Nebraska that had seen some tornado action recently and were impressed with the damage that had been done in that part of the country. We were ahead of a big thunderstorm just as we crossed the border into Kansas and the humidity hit us like a brick. We managed a stop at the local Dairy Queen for a dipped cone and then drove the rest of the way home. After two weeks, our grass was pretty overgrown and things looked a little weedy. But it was a great vacation and so nice to spend so much time doing things we love to do and spending time with family.
